Can You Do Yoga During Periods?

Can You Do Yoga During Periods?

Periods can be an emotionally and physically draining time of the month – the cramps are unbearable, the mood-swings, the cravings! This leads many to wonder if they should continue their regular exercise routines while bleeding 😮‍💨  The good news is, yoga can be a gentle and effective way to manage period symptoms 🧘🏻‍♀️ Here’s everything you need to know about practicing yoga during your period!   Benefits of Doing Yoga on Your Period 🙅🏻‍♀️Alleviates Cramps: Certain yoga poses can help relieve the pain associated with menstrual cramps. Gentle stretching and poses that focus on the lower abdomen can ease tension and provide relief. 🤌🏽Reduces Bloating:  Yoga can improve circulation and stimulate the digestive system, which helps reduce bloating and discomfort. 😌Boosts Mood: Hormonal changes during menstruation can affect your mood. Yoga promotes relaxation and the release of endorphins, which can help improve your mood and reduce stress. 🏃🏻‍♀️Increases Energy Levels: While you might feel more tired during your period, gentle yoga can help increase your energy levels by improving blood flow and reducing fatigue. Recommended Yoga Poses During Periods 👉🏼Child’s Pose (Balasana): This pose gently stretches the lower back and hips, providing relief from cramps and helping you relax. 👉🏼Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana): This gentle flow between two poses helps to massage the abdominal organs, easing cramps and promoting flexibility in the spine. 👉🏼Reclining Bound Angle Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana): This restorative pose helps open the hips and promotes relaxation, which can be especially comforting during your period. 👉🏼Forward Fold (Uttanasana): A gentle forward bend can help release tension in the back and neck and calm the mind. 👉🏼Supine Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana): This pose helps to stretch the spine and relieve tension in the lower back, which can be beneficial for period-related discomfort. Typically going for a more relaxing style, like Yin Yoga, is ideal during your period.  If you’re worried how your period underwear could manage all these poses, without any leaks, we recommend the Hip Hugger or Lace Bikini. Both of these styles have padding all the way to the back, so you can Savasana in peace.  Conclusion Yes, you can absolutely do yoga during your period! Yoga can be a gentle and effective way to alleviate menstrual symptoms, boost your mood, and increase your energy levels. Focus on gentle, restorative poses that promote relaxation🧘🏻‍♀️ But the most important aspect of practicing yoga during your period is to listen to your body. Every woman’s experience of menstruation is unique, and what feels good for one person might not be suitable for another.  By practicing yoga mindfully, you can find relief and maintain a sense of well-being throughout your menstrual cycle 😌   https://www.arhantayoga.org/blog/yoga-and-period-practice-yoga-inversions-during-menstruation/ https://www.verywellhealth.com/yoga-poses-for-your-period-3567221

Why does my underwear stain even after washing?

Why does my underwear stain even after washing?

You just bought a new pair of underwear, and wore them only a couple of times. But, why are there light, bleach-like patches showing up, even after a good wash? 🤔  Regardless of how often you wash them or how few times they’ve been worn, you might notice lighter areas in the crotch that look like they’ve been bleached. This isn’t due to a faulty washing machine or excessive wear – your vaginal discharge can actually bleach your underwear!   Why Are There ‘Bleached’ Patches in Your Underwear? Your menstrual blood is a cocktail of blood, mucus, tissues, enzymes, proteins, etc! The vaginal discharge in it has a pH level that ranges from 3.5 to 7, leaning towards the acidic side. A healthy vagina produces more acidic discharge, but pH levels can vary due to factors like your sex life, hormones, and menstrual cycle. The vagina contains ‘good’ bacteria, like lactobacilli, which maintain the optimal acidity level to keep the vagina healthy and prevent bad bacteria from causing infections. This discharge increases during ovulation and pregnancy due to an increase in cervical mucus. When exposed to air, the discharge & blood can cause mild yellow or rusty brown stains due to oxidation. Guess what? It can also cause holes over time! 🫢 So having bleached patches on your underwear is quite normal and generally nothing to worry about, as long as you continue washing your period underwear thoroughly. Here’s a quick guide on the best way to do it! Is there something I can do to fix it? Honestly – not really.  Enzyme-based cleaning products can help break down discharge stains, but ensure you use gentle cleaning products (avoid harsh cleaners!) to ensure they’re safe from any damage to the fabric! 🌸 When should you be concerned about discharge? If your discharge comes with:  😷 A rotten fishy odour🩸 Bloodstains, especially when you are nowhere near your period😖 Persistent irritation 🔥 Burning sensation❓Unusual colour/texture changes: green discharge or cottage cheese-like texture deserve professional attention as they may be signs of an infection.  Your vagina is a delicate balance of enzymes & bacteria - the slightest change can upset this balance.  Every cycle, every bleed is different too!  While subtle changes in texture and colour are normal throughout the month, extreme bleaching on your period underwear might also be a sign to get your regular checkup done! 🏥   Sources: https://www.cheekypants.com/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-vaginal-discharge.html https://metro.co.uk/2019/05/24/vagina-leaves-bleached-patches-underwear-9672616/ https://cycle.care/en/afscheidingsvlekken-in-ondergoed-zo-krijg-je-ze-eruit

Got Questions about Period Underwear? We gotchu.

Got Questions about Period Underwear? We gotchu.

Hey there!  We get that it can be hard to trust a new menstrual care product even though it promises better absorbency, comfort, and sustainability than pads! Making a habit switch is tough! I had my reservations too, when I tried my first period underwear back in 2021.  But, once I tried it, there was no going back! So, to help you make the right decision, I’ve curated a list of FAQs for you to better understand what Period Underwear is all about & help you build the confidence to switch up your menstrual care! Q: “How does it work?”  A: Our Period Underwear is powered with a 4-Layer Absorbent Core. The top layer, which we call the ‘skin touch layer’ is made with lenzing modal, it’s similar to cotton, but dries quicker! We tested several different fabrics for this layer because it’s the one that’s in direct contact with your Vagina. We wanted something performance driven, and after a lot of testing, lenzing modal was it! The middle layer is where all the blood gets soaked up. It’s internally stitched into the gusset of the underwear, so you don’t see or feel this layer. We seal it up with a TPU-coated layer for our No-Leaks-Promise, and then it’s finished off with a layer of bamboo! Read about how each layer works, right here.  Q: “Are you sure I won’t smell when I wear one??” A: When your underwear is exposed in front of you in the washroom, then yes, you would recognise the odour. But the odour doesn’t perspire through your clothes. Tried & tested, by more than 3000 women! Q: “Can I wear these through the night?”  A: Yes! Many of our users have even said they get better sleep during their period wearing Nushu instead of pads!  Q: “Do they really get clean? Are they 100% hygienic?” A: Absolutely! As long as you rinse, squeeze and wash them with detergent, they’re 100% safe to use. We’ve even sent our product to several gynacs around the country to get their opinion- all green lights on their end! :) Q: “Do I really not need a pad with Period Underwear?” A: Nope! Our brand ethos is actually against pads. We believe women deserve a much better method in managing their flow. So, it’s safe to say - You CAN and SHOULD go pad free with Nushu on hand! ;)  Q: “How many pairs do I need for a cycle?” A: Depends on how long your period lasts, and how heavy your flow is.. But typically, we suggest 3-5 pairs to ensure a smooth rotation of underwear throughout the cycle. Our Fantastic Five Combo, consists of all 5 styles, across 3 absorbency levels so you have the right companion for each day of your flow! To make the most of your combo, we have a  Beginner’s Guide to Using Period Underwear that you should definitely check out!  Q: “Can I wear this while swimming?” A: The underwear isn’t designed for swimming, but we get this question a lot and do know a few women who’ve tried it in the pool and experienced no leaks! So we’d say – take a chance based on how heavy your flow is!  Q: “How do I wash it?” A: We put together a step by step guide right here. Just rinse, machine-wash & hang-dry! Q: “What chemicals are used in the production?” A: We don’t use ANY additional chemicals in production. The only chemicals used are those that are used in general garment production (such as fabric dye - these would be used in your everyday clothing and underwear too). We haven't opted to add extra chemicals for anti bacterial properties, or fragrance. We believe this is a red flag with the menstrual care industry today and we want to deliver an honest, chemical free product :) I hope this gives some clarity. If you have a question or concern you’d like to address, you can reach out to me directly! WhatsApp me on +91 8454870509 and quote “FAQ” along with your question, I’ll make sure I answer these myself :)  Happy Periods!   Love, Avisha Founder, Nushu

Earth Day 2024: Nushu Impact Report

Earth Day 2024: Nushu Impact Report

This Earth week, we celebrate that small numbers can make a big impact! Before we get into our very first Impact Report, here’s some context on menstruators in India: 💁🏽‍♀️ There are 325 Million  menstruating women in India 📝 Of which 121 Million  women use pads (that's only 37.2%) 📅 On average, women use 12 pads every month 🩸 Women menstruate for roughly 40 years Add all that up and you get 🌎 17.4B pads disposed of ANNUALLY! 🌎 What Happens in the Landfills? So - because most pads are made up of 90% plastic, they take 500-800 years to decompose.  During these 500+ years, the disposed pads emit: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) 🧪 CO2 & other greenhouse gases ⛽️ Leachate (toxic liquid waste) that could contaminate groundwater if not properly managed ☠️   The Nushu Impact We launched our period underwear in September 2023. Over the last 8 months, we’ve worked tirelessly to impact the way menstrual care is approached in India. While we've found a solution that combines efficiency, comfort AND sustainability, we’ve converted only a fraction  of pad-using menstruators so far.  Our current user base will prevent 8.3L of pads from being disposed of in the next 2 years. (Each Nushu underwear can be reused for 2 years). If they continued using Nushu for the rest of their menstrual years, the number of pads prevented from being disposed of, could reach a total of 🚨1.03CR🚨.   Carbon Emissions: Using disposable sanitary pads results in roughly 8.9kg (Check out the research here) of carbon emissions per year, per user.  Therefore, over a span of ~40 years, each woman will contribute approximately 360 KG of CO2 emissions to their carbon footprint, just by using disposable pads. Our users will menstruate for another 25 years (on average). So, if they continue to use Nushu Period Underwear, each of them will prevent at least 222KGs of carbon emissions. And collective impact made by our user base? 6.8L KGs of Carbon emissions! 🤩   👉 Stating this again: We’ve converted only a fraction  of pad-using menstruators so far!  Think of the impact we could have as we continue to expand our reach.🌱 To all our customers & users – THANK YOU FOR TRUSTING US!🤍 We are passionate about continuing to serve you with better menstrual care for the rest of your life.   Sustainability is not a destination, it’s a journey 🌎 Happy Earth Day! Love,  Team Nushu Committed to transforming lives, one period underwear at a time.     Resources: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0921344919303179 To know more about our product, and the materials we use, please visit our sustainability page for in depth details.

Feeling Bloated on Your Period? Here's Why and What You Can Do!

Feeling Bloated on Your Period? Here's Why and What You Can Do!

Period bloating is pretty common when you’re bleeding! You feel full and lethargic and your perfect-fit jeans are suddenly just an abomination! But understanding why it happens can help manage and alleviate this discomfort, and so we did some research and gathered to help alleviate the “I feel fat” downer:  “Why Am I Bloated?” Days leading up to your period & during your period, your body goes through a wide range of hormonal fluctuations. This can often cause digestion issues. A week before your period is when your estrogen & progesterone levels start showing a gradual decline, which triggers your period ultimately. Since your gastrointestinal tract is LOADED with estrogen & progesterone receptors, the fluctuation in these hormones affect your digestive system in 2 ways: They slow down your metabolism, your digestive processes, as well as bowel movements causing you to bloat & constipate more than you normally would They also control fluid regulation in your body, which means your body is holding onto a lot more water to avoid dehydration & loss of electrolytes Diet matters We have all been there - PMS often tempts us to indulge in an extra bit of junk; sweet & salty, both! But often, excessive sugar can cause inflammation in the gut, which worsens the bloat. Excessive sodium, on the other hand, can cause your body to hold onto even more water - making you feel more bloated. But what happens after? Now — don’t shoot the messenger, but when you get your period, your uterus releases an enzyme, called Prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are basically what are causing all those uncomfortable-to-insane-ranging cramps!  Their main job is to cause muscle contractions in the uterus, which help shed the lining, resulting in your period! But, as a side effect, it ends up causing contractions in your lower abdomen too, causing a lot of the waste to finally get cleared off.  Explains why you run to the washroom more often, once your period starts!  While it can be difficult to control your hormonal fluctuations and the bloating & digestive issues they cause as a bi-product, there are remedies you can apply to help yourself! Stay Hydrated:  Do the basics – drink at least eight glasses a day, and ditch the packaged fruit juices that claim to be “real and fresh” for homemade fresh juices or coconut water. Caffeine can worsen bloating too, so try to replace your morning coffee with a herbal tea!  Staying hydrated can help flush out excess sodium and reduce water retention.  Potassium-Rich Foods:  Potassium helps regulate your sodium levels which in turn affects the water your body holds onto. Your best bet? Bananas, leafy greens, avocados and tomatoes! They’re super rich in potassium and help counteract the bloating! Herbal Remedies:  Some ingredients in your kitchen, such as ginger, peppermint, turmeric & fennel have natural anti-inflammatory properties and can help ease inflammation in your gut and relieve bloating & pain. Boil them to make a soothing herbal tea that also aids digestion! Exercise Regularly:  No brainer, right? Regular workouts can help stimulate bowel movements and ease bloating. And you don’t need them to be too strenuous, especially on day 1 & 2 of your period– brisk walking, yoga, or cycling can be moderate workout regimes that help with bloating & cramps.  Conclusion: Managing your period might feel like a dreaded experience with the symphony of hormones playing with your insides, BUT there are tools to help. Good food, adequate water, sleep & exercise are foundational pillars that help.  Just remember - stay hydrated, maintain a balanced diet, and prioritise self-care to manage period bloating effectively. Wear comfy clothes (cue to ditch the jeans) and comfy period panties! But if symptoms persist or become severe, consult a doctor for personalised guidance. The Technology Behind Nushu Period Underwear

The Technology Behind Nushu Period Underwear

In recent years, menstrual care saw the rise of some innovative & sustainable alternatives to plastic pads – and one of them was Reusable Period Underwear Reusable period underwear is specially designed to offer a comfortable and absorbent alternative to traditional pads, tampons, and cups during menstruation. They are typically made with multiple layers of fabric, that ensure you get high-level absorbency, without the discomfort of rashes or prolonged wetness! These period panties are no less than a revolution – combining comfort and efficiency in menstrual care products! But what is the technology behind them? Reusable period underwear works by leveraging a combination of absorbent layers and leak-proof barriers to capture menstrual flow and prevent leakage. The absorbent layers, often made of natural and synthetic fibres, soak up the menstrual fluid while the leak-proof barrier, usually made of waterproof or water-resistant material, prevents any leaks from staining your clothes. Introducing The Nushu 4-Layer Absorbent Core: 1. Lenzing Modal: This innermost layer of our Nushu Period Underwear is known for its excellent moisture-wicking properties & soft touch. It is super breathable & dries quickly enough to prevent any discomfort from wetness. 2. Microfiber: This towel-like layer is where all the fluid is absorbed. Microfiber is super absorbent, easy to clean, reusable, and durable, which makes it a practical and sustainable choice. 3. TPU-Coated Waterproof Layer: This layer is a protective barrier to prevent leaks and stains, all while remaining flexible, breathable, and comfortable to wear. Period panties with a TPU-coated waterproof layer can withstand multiple washings without losing their flexibility or effectiveness. 4. Bamboo Fabric: Bamboo fabric provides superior softness, moisture-wicking capabilities, breathability, and antibacterial properties. The shell fabric hugs your body offering a comfortable natural fit. We spent 2 years researching and developing the perfect combination of layers - a technology that absorbs heavy flows for long hours, with no leakage, and no compromise on comfort! At Nushu, our aim is to give women the ultimate upgrade in their menstrual care.  We bring you 5 styles, that vary in 3 levels of absorbency, to help you manage your flow no matter how heavy or light. Several styles also incorporate lace into their design to remind you that your period is not something to be disposed of & erased, but to be cherished with love. Not only are they good for you, but also far less harmful to the planet than pads or tampons. Roughly 12 Billion pads end up in landfills every year. Moreover, every pad takes ~500 years to decompose! Nushu’s Reusable Period Underwear can be washed and reused for 2 years, reducing waste & conserving resources, making it one of the most sustainable alternatives out there! But how do you take care of your Reusable Period Underwear? We’ve chalked out an easy 3-step process: 1. Rinse the underwear under running water to wash off all fluids. Squeeze it to ensure the underwear is completely free of any blood, until you see clear water 2. Depending on your preference, you can now either pop it into the machine or hand wash it with your regular detergent. 3. You can then hang dry the underwear and let it dry for up to 8-12 hours! Avoid throwing it into a dryer, though. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to wash your Nushu Reusable Period Underwear. Conclusion Reusable period underwear offers a convenient, comfortable, and eco-friendly solution for managing menstruation. With their innovative design and effective functionality, they provide reliable protection against leaks and stains while reducing waste and environmental impact. By making the switch to reusable period underwear, you can prioritise both your comfort and the health of the planet. Make the sustainable choice today and experience the difference for yourself!

Breaking the Silence: How to talk to your teenage daughter about her period

Breaking the Silence: How to talk to your teenage daughter about her period

On March 27th, we tragically lost another life to stigma and a lack of conversation. The recent loss of a 14-year-old girl, due to stress from her first period, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of open dialogue within families and schools. Menstruation is a natural and inevitable part of a woman's life, marking a significant milestone in her journey toward adulthood. However, by initiating a dialogue with your daughter about menstruation, you're not only equipping her with essential knowledge but also creating a safe space for her to express her thoughts, concerns, and questions without fear or judgment. The hesitation to communicate often stems from stigma and a lack of understanding on how to broach the topic. So, we've broken it down into pieces, making the process a little easier for you and your daughter! Timing and Approach: Choosing the right moment and approach is crucial when broaching the subject of menstruation with your daughter. Pick a private setting where she feels comfortable, with no phones and no interruptions! Approach the conversation gently, with love and empathy for the confusion a teenager might go through, acknowledging any anxieties or uncertainties she may have with empathy. Reassure her that it's normal to feel a mix of emotions when confronted with new experiences and changes in her body. Provide Accurate Information: Dispelling myths and providing factual information is extremely important in alleviating fear and confusion surrounding menstruation. Explain the biological process of menstruation in simple, age-appropriate language. Here are some prompts: - The menstrual cycle and its frequency - Hormonal changes throughout the month and how they affect her mind and body - How to manage cramps - Hygienic menstrual practices - Safe and comfortable menstrual care products she can choose from! Encourage your daughter to ask questions and express any fears she may have - Remind her that no question is off-limits or too trivial! Be prepared to address common misconceptions too! Emphasise on Emotional Well-being: In light of recent events, it's crucial to prioritize your daughter's emotional well-being during this conversation. Acknowledge that it's normal to feel a range of emotions, including excitement, apprehension, or even anxiety when experiencing puberty and menstruation for the first time. Encourage her to communicate her feelings and emphasize that seeking support from trusted adults or healthcare professionals is a sign of strength, not weakness. Promote a Positive Body Image: Menstruation often coincides with physical changes that can impact a young girl's body image and self-esteem. Misinformation around menstruation and drastic hormonal changes, coupled with unrealistic beauty standards for a woman’s body, only add fuel to the fire! Encourage healthy lifestyle habits, such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep, which can contribute to her overall well-being and resilience during menstruation. Address the Stigma: Last but not least, let’s ensure that we don’t sweep under the rug what needs to be spoken about. Misinformation about periods can make the experience more difficult than it needs to be. Remind her that there is no shame in menstruation, staining clothes or bedsheets, asking for a menstrual hygiene product, or taking a day off to rest, despite what people around her might lead her to believe. Yes, periods can be painful and irregular at first, but they are never to be ignored or undermined! Conclusion: Initiating a conversation about menstruation with your daughter is a vital step towards promoting her physical and emotional well-being. By approaching the topic with empathy, understanding, and accurate information, you can help dispel myths, alleviate fears, and ensure she develops a positive and healthy attitude towards menstruation. Remember, your support and guidance play a crucial role in empowering your daughter to navigate this transformative phase of her life with confidence and resilience.
